Description

Night Blooming Cereus (transient beauty), Epiphyllum Oxypetalum (upon the leaf) is native to Central and South America. It grows flowers on the edges of its leafs. It  is an easy to grow cactus when provided with favorable good lighting and soil conditions. The blooming occurs in one evening and this usually happens around 9 pm. When the buds are almost a foot long, it means they are closer to opening. The giant buds will slowly unfurl showcasing a robust white flower. Once the flower dies, it focuses its energy on fruit development.

The blooming of the plants depends on age (in some cases 5 years or more), lots of sun and good maintenance. It likes to be pot bound.

Observations

N.B: We potted a leaf that broke from the main plant and it had a flower bud that was almost about to bloom. We brought it indoors as our main plant is outside in the cool weather (September 2016). Within a few days of housing it, it bloomed indoors (September 16,2015 – 5 pm – 9:30 pm, almost full moon or the next day was officially a full moon). Indoors the air is much warmer, so maybe that sped up the process a bit. Afterwards, we brought it outside (September 15,2016 – 11 pm, 12ºC outside) in the cooler air, hoping it gets pollinated. By September 16,2016 – 9:16 am, 12ºC outside, it’s bloom was fully intact and had not wilted yet. Another fascinating surprise was that the main plant outdoors had a full bloom on one bud onlym with 3 left to bloom. On September 15, 2016, it was almost a full moon. September 16, 2016, was officially a full moon. Both blooms were still intact at 9:24 am, temperature outside was  12ºC.
